Selena Gomez's Early Life
Selena Marie Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former stage actress Mandy Teefey. She was named after the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, who passed away in 1995. Her father is of Mexican descent, while her mother, who was adopted, has Italian ancestry. Gomez's grandparents moved from Monterrey to Texas in the 1970s. Regarding her heritage, Gomez has stated that she is "a proud third-generation American-Mexican" and mentioned, "My family has quinceañeras, and we go to communion church. We do everything Catholic, but we actually don’t have any traditional things other than going to the park and barbecuing on Sundays after church." Gomez's fluency in Spanish diminished after she turned seven when she began working in television.
Her parents divorced when she was five, and she remained with her mother. Gomez has two younger half-sisters and a younger half-brother: Gracie Elliot Teefey (from Mandy and her second husband Brian Teefey) and Victoria "Tori" and Marcus Gomez (from Ricardo and his second wife Sara). She obtained her high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010.
Gomez was born when her mother was just 16 years old. Throughout her childhood, the family faced financial struggles, with her mother working hard to support them. At one point, Gomez recalled having to search for quarters to buy gas for their car. Her mother later remembered that they often bought spaghetti for dinner from their local dollar store. Gomez has said, "I was frustrated that my parents weren’t together, and I never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to give me a better life. I was panicking about what I would get if I lived [in Texas].” She later added that her mother was "really strong around me. It was a big responsibility to be with her at the age of 16. She gave up everything for me, worked three jobs, supported me, and dedicated her life to me."
Gomez had a close relationship with her grandparents during her childhood and participated in various competitions. While her parents finished their schooling, her grandparents often took care of her, and she has said they "raised her" until her family found success in show business.
Gomez's Career
2002-2006: Early Career
Gomez first developed an interest in building a career in entertainment by watching her mother prepare for stage productions. In 2002, she began her acting career in the children's television series Barney & Friends, playing the character Gianna. The show marked her first acting experience. Gomez recalls that during her childhood, she was very shy and didn't know what "camera right" meant or what blocking was. "I learned everything from Barney," she said.
Gomez appeared in thirteen episodes of the show from 2002 to 2004; the producers eventually let her go because she was considered "too old" for the series. While working on Barney & Friends, she had small roles in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and the made-for-television movie Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005). She also guest-starred in an episode of the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody in 2006.
2007-2012: Disney and Breakthrough with Selena Gomez
In 2007, Gomez was given a recurring role as pop star Mikayla in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. During this time, she filmed pilot episodes for two potential Disney Channel series: the first was a spin-off of The Suite Life titled Arwin!, and the second was Stevie Thinking What? Later, she auditioned for a role in the network's series Wizards of Waverly Place, ultimately winning the lead role of Alex Russo. Gomez and her mother then moved to Los Angeles.
Wizards of Waverly Place
Gomez portrayed a teenage girl in a family of wizards who owned a restaurant in New York City. The show quickly became successful for Disney Channel and marked Gomez's rise to mainstream fame. This role earned her "teen idol" status, making her one of the highest-paid child TV stars of all time, earning between $25,000 to $30,000 per episode. The series received numerous awards and nominations, winning the Outstanding Children's Program at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. It garnered positive reviews, with Gomez being particularly praised for her comic timing and sarcastic delivery.
Gomez's Career: 2008
In 2008, while working on the second season of Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez lent her voice to the character Helga in the animated film Horton Hears a Who! The film achieved both commercial and critical success, grossing over \$300 million worldwide. Following this, Gomez portrayed Mary Santiago, an aspiring dancer, in the teen musical comedy film Another Cinderella Story, the second installment of the Cinderella Story series, which was released directly to video. This role earned her a Young Artist Award.
She contributed three songs to the soundtrack, including the single "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," which became her first entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Additionally, she recorded the song "Fly to Your Heart" for the soundtrack of the animated film Tinker Bell. That same year, at the age of 16, Gomez signed with Hollywood Records and formed her own production company, July Moon Productions. Under this company, she was set to release two films. The first, titled What Boys Want, would feature Gomez as a girl who can hear what men are thinking. She later announced a film adaptation of the novel Thirteen Reasons Why, in which she would play the role of a young girl who commits suicide; however, ultimately, neither film was produced, but Gomez would later create a television adaptation of the novel.
Gomez continued to enjoy mainstream success throughout the following year, appearing as Alex Russo in a crossover episode of the Disney Channel series The Suite Life on Deck in 2009. She later guest-starred in the Disney Channel series Sonny with a Chance. Gomez also appeared in a remix of "Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)" by Forever the Sickest Kids, which was released as a single that April. Alongside Demi Lovato, she starred in the Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program, which aired in June 2009 and attracted a total of 8.5 million viewers during its premiere. The duo recorded the song "One and the Same" for the film's soundtrack.
She subsequently starred in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, a television film based on the series. The movie premiered in August to 11.4 million viewers, becoming the number one scripted telecast of the year and the second most-watched TV movie on cable after High School Musical 2. Roxana Hadadi of The Washington Post praised the performances of Gomez, David Henrie, and Jake T. Austin, noting their "acting skills that carry the film." The film won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program for the second consecutive year at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. Gomez recorded three songs for the television series and film soundtrack, including the single "Magic." She later voiced Princess Selenia in the English-language version of the French animated/live-action film Arthur and the Revenge of Maltazard.
Hoping to enter the music industry, Gomez formed the pop rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene through her recording contract with Hollywood Records. The band's name was a "tongue-in-cheek jab" at those who labeled Gomez a "wannabe." The group's first studio album, Kiss & Tell, influenced by pop rock and electronic rock, was released in September 2009. It debuted at number nine on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart, selling 66,000 copies in its first week.
The album received mixed reviews, with some critics praising its "fun" nature while others criticized Gomez's vocal performance. Although the lead single was not commercially successful, the second single, "Naturally," became a breakthrough hit, reaching number 29 in the United States and number seven in the United Kingdom.
In 2010, Gomez starred opposite Joey King in Ramona and Beezus, a film adaptation of Beverly Cleary's beloved children's book series. Gomez portrayed Beezus Quimby, earning positive reviews for her performance. That same year, she reprised her voice role as Princess Selenia in Arthur 3: The War of the Two Worlds.
Continuing her musical journey, Gomez, along with her band Selena Gomez & the Scene, released their second studio album, A Year Without Rain. The album debuted at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling over 66,000 copies in its first week. Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers commenting on the use of auto-tune on Gomez's vocals. The album spawned two singles, "Round & Round" and "A Year Without Rain," both achieving moderate success. The band's popularity was recognized at the 37th People's Choice Awards, where they won Favorite Breakout Artist.
The following year, the band released their third and final studio album, When the Sun Goes Down. Debuting at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200, the album climbed to number three in its second week, fueled by the success of its lead single, "Who Says." The song became the band's highest-charting single, peaking at number twenty-one in the United States. The album's second single, "Love You Like a Love Song," achieved even greater success, peaking at number twenty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for an impressive 38 weeks. The song also reached the top ten in Canada and topped the charts in Russia. "Love You Like a Love Song" has since garnered recognition as a modern classic, with Pitchfork's Alex Frank dubbing it "a cult karaoke classic" and Billboard ranking it as the biggest song to peak at number twenty-two in 2022.
Gomez's rising star power was acknowledged by Billboard for three consecutive years, from 2010 to 2012, when she was featured on their prestigious 21 Under 21 list.
Gomez starred in the comedy film Monte Carlo (2011) alongside Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy. She played the lead role of Grace, a teenager who gets "mistaken for a socialite" and "travels to Paris" while pretending to be someone named Cordelia. To prepare for the role, she learned to play polo and underwent dialect training to speak in two different British accents. Reviews noted that Gomez's accent was "spot-on." The film received mixed reviews from critics. Nick Schager of Slant Magazine found Gomez "winsome, but too bland to lend any life to a stock character, save for a few scenes that allow her to unleash her Cordelia-like icy, sarcastic bitch." Gomez also appeared in a cameo role in the film The Muppets. In addition, she hosted the MuchMusic Video Awards in June and the MTV Europe Music Awards in November.
2012-2014: Dance Hits and Film Focus
Gomez confirmed in January 2012 that she would be taking a break from music, putting Selena Gomez & the Scene on hiatus. That year, Wizards of Waverly Place officially ended its run on Disney Channel after four seasons. Gomez starred in the controversial Harmony Korine-directed Spring Breakers (2012) alongside James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. The film premiered at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in September and was released theatrically the following year.
The story followed four college-aged girls who decide to rob a fast food restaurant in order to pay for their spring break trip. It saw Gomez playing a more mature character than previously and she reportedly "freaked out a little" on set. Spring Breakers received generally positive reviews from critics, with some calling it a potential cult classic. The film has appeared in several retrospective "best of" lists, including the BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century. Reflecting on Gomez's transition from Disney, Manohla Dargis of The New York Times wrote: "It’s no shock that Ms. Gomez has moved on from Disney. ‘Spring Breakers’ allows her to act out the kind of behavior that drives tabloids and gossip blogs without risking any real-world tabloid opprobrium and career-crushing consequences."
Gomez voiced Mavis Dracula in the animated film Hotel Transylvania, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2012 and was released in theaters the same month to mixed reviews. Hotel Transylvania was a commercial success, grossing US$358 million worldwide.
In 2013, Gomez starred opposite Ethan Hawke in the action thriller film Getaway, in which she played a young hacker. The film was a critical and commercial failure and earned Gomez a nomination for Worst Actress at the 34th Golden Raspberry Awards. Christopher Orr of The Atlantic described her as "trying hard to be a tough-minded adult, but with no real idea of what that might entail."
Gomez also served as executive producer and reprised her role in the Disney Channel television special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.
Despite previously stating she would be taking a break from music, Gomez released "Come & Get It" in April 2013 as the lead single from her solo debut album. The song became her first top-ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six. It also reached the top ten in Canada and the UK. Stars Dance, her debut solo album, was released in July of the same year. The album leans heavily into EDM and electropop sounds. It debuted at number one in the United States, selling 97,000 copies in its first week and becoming her first chart-topping album. It also reached number one in Canada. Stars Dance received mixed reviews from music critics, with some praising her attempt to craft a more mature sound while others criticized her vocal delivery and questioned her artistic identity. The album's second single, "Slow Down", achieved moderate success. Inspired by artists like Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, Gomez incorporated complex and elaborate dance routines into the album's music videos and her promotional live performances. The music video for "Come & Get It" won Best Pop Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
Gomez embarked on her Stars Dance Tour in August 2013. After performing in North America and Europe, Gomez canceled the Australian and Asian leg of the tour in December 2013, claiming that she would be taking a hiatus to spend time with her family. In January 2014, it was reported that Gomez had spent two weeks at Dawn at The Meadows, a treatment facility in Wickenburg, Arizona, that specializes in treating addiction and trauma in young adults. Her representative stated that she had voluntarily "spent time but not for substance abuse." Gomez confirmed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with lupus and had entered rehab to undergo chemotherapy following the tour's cancellation. Gomez starred as an innocent straight-A student named Nina Pennington in the film Behaving Badly (2014). The project, filmed prior to Gomez's stint in rehab, was released in August to a generally negative critical and commercial reception. However, critics deemed Gomez's performance as superior to the film. Gomez also had a supporting role in the William H. Macy-directed debut drama Rudderless (2014). The independent film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and received a mixed reception from critics. At the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, Gomez was honored with the Ultimate Choice Award for her "contributions to the entertainment industry".
In April 2014, Gomez fired her mother and stepfather, who had acted as her managers since her Disney days. She then signed with WME and Brillstein companies to manage her career. The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Gomez's decision to seek new management was likely part of a strategy to pursue more mature roles in film and music and to move away from her "Disney teen idol" image. This move fueled speculation that her contract with Hollywood Records was coming to an end. In November 2014, Gomez surprised fans by releasing her new single, "The Heart Wants What It Wants", and confirmed that she would be releasing a compilation album to fulfill her contract with the label. The single became her second top-ten hit in the United States and reached the top ten in Canada. That same month, Gomez released her first greatest hits album, For You. The album debuted at number twenty-four on the US Billboard 200, selling 35,506 album-equivalent units in its first week. Gomez officially parted ways with Hollywood Records and signed with Interscope Records in December 2014.
2015-2016: Revival
While working on her second studio album, Gomez collaborated with German DJ Zedd on "I Want You to Know", which was released in February 2015 and debuted at number seventeen in the United States in May. That same month, she made a cameo appearance in Taylor Swift's music video for "Bad Blood". Gomez released "Good for You", featuring rapper ASAP Rocky, in June as the lead single from her second studio album. The song debuted atop the Digital Songs chart with first-week sales of 179,000 copies—Gomez's career-best sales week for a single—and went on to peak at number one on the Pop Songs airplay chart, her first single to do so. It reached the top ten of the charts in Australia and Canada. Gomez later reprised her voice role as Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015); the film was met with a positive critical reception and commercial success upon release, grossing US $\\$474 million worldwide. She was awarded Favorite Animated Movie Voice at the 42nd People's Choice Awards.
Gomez released her second studio album, Revival, in October 2015. It is primarily a dance-pop and electropop record with R&B vibes. The album was critically acclaimed, with reviewers praising its production and lyrical content. Writing for Rolling Stone, Brittany Spanos opined that "Revivalis a bold title for a 23-year-old's second album, but from start to finish, Gomez earns it," noting that "her sound is growing up as she takes ownership of her sexuality and independence." Chris DeVille of Billboard hailed it as "one of the most engaging pop albums of the late 2010s." The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 117,000 album units and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It remains Gomez's highest first-week sales to date. "Same Old Love" was released as the album's second single and topped the Mainstream Top 40 chart. It peaked at number five in the United States, tying with "Good for You" as Gomez's highest-charting single at the time, and reached the top ten in Canada. "Hands to Myself" served as the album's third single and became her third consecutive number-one on the Mainstream Top 40, making Gomez the sixth female artist to score at least three number-one singles from a single album on the chart. The single also peaked within the top ten in the United States and the top five in Canada. "Kill Em with Kindness" was released four months later as the fourth and final single from Revival. For her performance on the Billboard music charts, Gomez was honored with the Chart-Topper award at the 2015 Billboard Women in Music event.
Gomez served as a main mentor in the ninth season of the reality singing competition The Voice. She had a cameo role in Adam McKay's film The Big Short (2015). In 2016, Gomez had a supporting role as a young runaway hitchhiker named Dot in the comedy-drama The Fundamentals of Caring, alongside Paul Rudd, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and was released on Netflix five months later. The film received a positive critical response; Tristram Fane Saunders of *The Daily Telegraph* described Gomez's performance as "impressive" and "mature". She served as a musical guest on an episode of the NBC late-night sketch comedy Saturday Night Live in January 2016. The film grossed US$108 million worldwide and received mixed to positive reviews.
Gomez embarked on her worldwide Revival Tour in May 2016. She stated that this tour would focus solely on her as an artist and would feature less choreography and fewer special effects than her previous tours. During the tour, Gomez began working on her third studio album and added a new song titled "Feel Me" to her Revival Tour setlist. Due to high demand from fans, the song was later released in February 2020. After touring North America, Asia, and Oceania, she canceled the European and South American legs in August 2016 due to anxiety, panic attacks, and depression stemming from her lupus.
Gomez was featured on Charlie Puth's single, "We Don't Talk Anymore." The song was an international success, reaching the top ten in the United States, Australia, France, and Spain, and reaching number one in Italy. It was certified 5× Platinum by the RIAA. The music video was one of the most viewed music videos on YouTube in 2016, with over 3 billion views.
Gomez also had a supporting role in In Dubious Battle (2016), directed by and starring James Franco. The film premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival to underwhelming reviews.
That same year, she made a guest appearance on the Comedy Central sketch series Inside Amy Schumer. Gomez and Canadian singer Tory Lanez were also featured on Norwegian DJ Cashmere Cat's single "Trust Nobody."
Following her tour cancellation, Gomez checked herself back into rehab to focus on her mental health and was notably absent from social media. At the time, she was the most-followed person on Instagram and the first person to reach 100 million followers on the platform. In February 2023, she regained her status as the most-followed woman on the platform and the following month, became the first woman to reach 400 million followers. From 2015 to 2016, Gomez held nine Guinness World Records, including having the most-liked Instagram photo during that time.
After four months out of the public eye, Gomez made a triumphant return to the media at the 2016 American Music Awards, following her rehab stint. She was nominated for two awards: Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, which she won, and Artist of the Year. Her moving acceptance speech is considered one of the most powerful award show speeches in recent history. Gomez also won the biggest triple threat at the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards. At the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, she was nominated for two awards, including Top Female Artist. That same year, she was named in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in the music category and again in 2020 in the "All-Star Alumni" category.
2017-2019: Solo Releases and 13 Reasons Why
Gomez and Norwegian DJ Kygo collaborated on the single "It Ain't Me," released in February 2017. The song became a global hit, reaching the top ten on major music charts worldwide, including in the United States and the United Kingdom. It peaked within the top five in Australia, Canada, Germany, and numerous other European countries. "It Ain't Me" garnered nominations for major music awards globally, including Best Dance/Electronic Song at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. It became Gomez's highest-selling single in the UK, surpassing 1.4 million chart units sold.
Gomez worked as an executive producer for the series adaptation of the novel "Thirteen Reasons Why." The show premiered on Netflix in March 2017. The series drew criticism from various mental health charities and suicide prevention communities for its "dangerous content," with some considering the show to glamorize suicide. Addressing the controversy, Gomez stated, "We stayed very true to the book, and what Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated, yet suspenseful story, and I think that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to do it justice, and yes, it's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with the way it's doing." Despite the controversy, the other three seasons generally received negative reviews. "13 Reasons Why" was the most-tweeted-about show in 2017 and the most-watched original streaming series in 2018. The series concluded in June 2020 after four seasons. Gomez recorded a cover version of the song "Only You" for the soundtrack of the first season.
In May 2017, Gomez released the single "Bad Liar" along with a vertical music video that was available exclusively for streaming on Spotify; it was the first music video to premiere on Spotify. The song received universal acclaim from music critics, with some considering it Gomez's best song to date; Billboard ranked it as the best song of 2017. Rolling Stone placed "Bad Liar" at number 39 on its list of the best songs of the 2010s in 2019. Winston Cook-Wilson of Spin magazine found Gomez's vocals and the track "charmingly odd," calling its lyrics and sample usage "harebrained but ultimately brilliant." In October 2017, Gomez released the single "Fetish," featuring rapper Gucci Mane. Later that year, Gomez and EDM producer Marshmello released the single "Wolves." The song was a commercial success, reaching the top ten charts in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European countries, and peaking at number twenty in the United States. Towards the end of that year, Gomez was recognized as Billboard's Woman of the Year for her influence and commercial success.
In May 2018, Gomez released the single "Back to You" from the 13 Reasons Why Season 2 soundtrack. The song reached the top ten on various European country charts, the top five in Australia and Canada, and peaked within the top twenty in the U.S. and the U.K. In July, Gomez once again lent her voice to the character Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. The film was a commercial success, grossing US$528 million at the box office, and received mixed to positive reviews.Gomez was featured on DJ Snake's song "Taki Taki" alongside Ozuna and Cardi B, which was released in September. The single achieved worldwide success, reaching the top ten in Canada, France, Germany, and Italy, topping the charts in Spain and several Latin American countries, and peaking at number eleven in the United States. The song received numerous awards and nominations, including two Billboard Music Award nominations, and ultimately won Song of the Year at the 2019 Latin American Music Awards.
From 2011 to 2018, Gomez had a streak of sixteen consecutive top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the longest active run for any artist according to Billboard. In November 2018, Gomez surpassed Drake to become Spotify's most-streamed artist with 46 million monthly listeners, despite not releasing a new album since 2015 (Ariana Grande later surpassed this record). Gomez also appeared on Julia Michaels' single "Anxiety," released in January 2019, and collaborated with Benny Blanco, Tainy, and J Balvin on the song "I Can't Get Enough," which was released the following month.
Gomez appeared in Jim Jarmusch's comedy horror film The Dead Don't Die (2019). The film had its world premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews. That year, she also appeared in Woody Allen's romantic comedy A Rainy Day in New York, alongside Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning. Due to the resurgence of sexual abuse allegations against Allen from 1992, prompted by the MeToo movement, Gomez donated more than $1 million from her salary from the film to the Time's Up initiative. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but Gomez's performance was praised; Jessica Kiang of Variety wrote, "Gomez comes out the best of the younger cast, navigating some of the film's better lines with a knowing smirk."
Gomez served as an executive producer for the Netflix documentary Living Undocumented, which was released in October 2019 and follows eight undocumented families in America. The documentary was a critical success and was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy Award. In an op-ed for Time on October 1, 2019, Gomez wrote that she was approached about the project in 2017 and decided to get involved after watching footage that "captured the shame, uncertainty, and fear I saw my own family struggle with. But it also contained hope, optimism, and patriotism that so many undocumented immigrants hold in their hearts despite going through hell.
